The Chevrolet Volt is the 2016 Green Car of the Year!

The 2015 LA Auto Show has been a blast so far: we’ve seen some amazing debuts from the Chevy Spark EV to the Honda Civic Coupe, 2016 is sure to be a great year for auto enthusiasts! Another thing we love about the Auto Show is the award announcements, and this year we paid extra-close attention to Green Car Journal’s Green Car of the Year. This year the Chevrolet Volt beat out some stiff competition including the Toyota Prius, Honda Civic, Hyundai Sonata and Audi A3 E-Tron for Green Car of the Year.

The Green Car of the Year award is from the Green Car Journal. Awarded annually, the winner is selected by automotive and environmental experts including the likes of Jay Leno, Mario Andretti, and Johnathan Lash. Winners in previous years have included the Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid (2008), Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid (2011), and the BMW i3 (2015)

Chevrolet’s plug-in hybrid proved technologically advanced and environmentally friendly with an electric range of 53 electric miles, 420 miles on a full charge and full tank of gas, and an expected over 1,000 miles between gas fill-ups by charging regularly. Volt Owners Use Less Gas Then Expected

According to Consumer Reports web users, many Chevy Volt owners are claiming they use even less gas than Consumer Reports’ formal tests have assumed.

Consumer Reports has based their fuel economy calculations for the Volt being operated by electricity 70 percent of the time and gasoline 30 percent of the time. However, as they have learned from owners in their forums, some drivers are saving even more fuel by operating almost exclusively on electricity.

Here are a few quotes from Volt drivers bragging on the forums:

• User carriegordo reports driving 7,000 miles on just 7.3 gallons of gas. That’s less than a single tankful in the Volt’s already small 9.3-gallon tank.
• User marclee reported that 2800 of the 3200 miles he’s driven his Volt have been on electricity. That leaves just 400 on gas. (These numbers are easily retrieved from the efficiency screen on the Volt’s central display.)
• User themajor1975 reported driving 11,000 miles on 62 gallons of gas.
• Two other forum users reported driving more than 2500 miles on 10.7 gallons of gas, and 500 miles on just one gallon.
